What this quote means is that you would be more progressive than if yo were to stay with a bunch of knuckleheads .For example you are most likely to be more successful in school  by studying alone than with a group of people who are forcing you to do bad things like drugs and alcohol.This is a real thing that happens often, and most of the time it will lead you into the wrong path and will get you in a big problem.
